Photo Journal: Mandarin wine line

Workers prepare mandarin oranges to produce wine at the JA Izu Taiyo Mikan Winery in Higashiizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, with a citrusy aroma wafting through the air. Approximately 3 metric tons of mandarin oranges -- a local specialty -- were used for the first brewing of the season to produce some 5,000 bottles of wine. Due to the scorching heat this past summer, the sugar concentration of the fruit has risen. This will make the wine's texture smoother, according to the winery manager.
