Photo Journal: Romantic flames

Women in kimono light candles placed along the Seto River in Hida, Gifu Prefecture, on Jan. 15, 2016, during the annual "Santera mairi" (three temple visits) festival, where people visit Enkoji, Shinshuji and Honkoji temples in the town of Furukawa. The event has been held in the town for at least 300 years. In the Meiji and Taisho periods, young women working at silk factories in Nagano Prefecture would return to the town and dress up for the festival. As the event served as an opportunity for young locals to meet, it is now believed to bring romance to visitors to all three temples. (Mainichi)
