Photo Journal: A time to remember

(Mainichi)

People put their hands together as some 7,500 bamboo lanterns are lit up in memory of 6,434 people who died in the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, in this picture taken at Higashi Yuenchi Park in Kobe's Chuo Ward early on Jan. 17, 2016. A gathering was held at the park from 5:46 a.m. -- the time the magnitude-7.3 quake struck -- drawing some 61,000 people who offered a silent prayer for the quake victims. The number of participants in this year's gathering was the third-largest, partly because the day fell on a Sunday. Last year, which marked the 20th anniversary of the quake disaster, a record 101,000 people attended the event. (Mainichi)
