The Mainichi Newspapers Co. on Jan. 22 announced the conclusion of a contract with The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to become a Tokyo 2020 Official Partner in the category of "Newspapers."
The contract runs from Jan. 21, 2016, to the end of December 2020.
Domestic sponsors of the Tokyo Games are divided into three categories. At the top are Gold Partners, followed by Official Partners and then Official Supporters. Sponsors can exercise the right to use the Olympic symbols, slogans and the like as determined by their respective tiers of sponsorship. Sponsorship funds go toward the cost of running the games and bettering the level of Japanese athletes at the games.
"We want to renew our desire to boost restoration of areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, and enhance our support for the Paralympic movement as the only newspaper company in Japan that publishes a Braille paper," Yutaka Asahina, president of The Mainichi Newspapers, commented.
The Tokyo head office of the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, The Asahi Shimbun Co. and Nikkei Inc. the same day announced their own contracts as Tokyo 2020 Official Partners.
