Photo Journal: Green gold

(Mainichi)

A gold medal for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, which kicks off on Aug. 5, is checked at minting company Casa da Moeda do Brasil, which is commissioned by the Rio 2016 Organising Committee. The medal minting process for the Olympic Games has been finished and medals for the Paralympics are nearly completed. The Rio Games will have eco-friendly medals. A gold medal, for example, is made of 92.5 percent silver recycled from objects such as scrapped cars and mirrors with gold plating. Silver and bronze medals are also made with about 30 percent recycled materials. Inside the medals for the Paralympic Games are metal balls to identify the types of medals by the sounds that the balls make. (Mainichi)
