Photo Journal: Winter's messenger

A swan takes off among the morning mist in Agano, Niigata Prefecture, on Oct. 16, 2016. The migrating swans have arrived at the city's Lake Hyoko to spend the winter. Lake Hyoko is an artificial reservoir of around 8 hectares, registered in 2008 under the Ramsar Convention. It has been used as a habitat by whooper swans and tundra swans for over 60 years. Some 6,000 swans are expected to have arrived by mid-November, and the birds will then return to Siberia, Russia, in around March next year. (Mainichi)
