Photo Journal: Brushing things up

Planks called "maneki" bearing the names of popular kabuki actors are seen lined up at Myodenji temple in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, on Nov. 7, 2016. The same day, calligrapher Masaru Inoue, 71, began writing the names on plank after plank in the "Kantei" style of calligraphy featuring rounded characters the same day ahead of the annual "Kichirei Kaomise Kogyo" kabuki performances to be held between Nov. 30 and Dec. 25.
