Glimpses of Japan: Ancient court dances (1)

The new "Glimpses of Japan" photo series will take readers back more than a millennium to ancient Japan with pictures of "bugaku," or traditional court dances. At the garden of Rokka-en mansion in the Mie Prefecture city of Kuwana, bugaku performances are held in mid-May and mid-November every year. The photos taken by Kuwana local Sei Matsumoto capture the elegant and majestic moves at the biannual dance performance.
