Photo Journal: Cock-a-doodle-new

A giant geoglyph of a chicken is seen at Hitachi Seaside Park, in the city of Hitachinaka in Ibaraki Prefecture, from a Mainichi Shimbun helicopter. The chicken, which has been created in the buildup to the zodiac year of the rooster, is 24 meters long and 28 meters wide. The feathers on the chicken's neck have been arranged using approximately 500 kokia plants, which are known for their fluffy appearance. The crest and legs consist of approximately 15,000 pine cones, which were gathered from across the park by cooperative visitors. The Chinese character "den" (convey) has been added to the side of the chicken -- as the animal is known for conveying the arrival of a new dawn each morning, and this therefore symbolizes a bright future. The chicken will be on display until Jan 9. (Mainichi)
