Photo Journal: The tradition kicks on

People dressed in ancient Japanese costumes play the "kemari" football game in an annual New Year festival at UNESCO World Heritage Shimogamo-jinja shrine in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward on Jan. 4, 2017. In the non-competitive sport whose history is believed to go back to the 7th century, players pass the ball to others so that it doesn't hit the ground. Some 2,500 spectators gathered to see the event this day, cheering and applauding as players performed in-sync kemari techniques. (Mainichi)
