Photo Journal: Young hope

Young people wearing suits and kimonos celebrate their coming-of-age in a ceremony in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, on Jan. 8, 2017, a day before Coming-of-Age Day. Coming-of-age ceremonies were held the same day across the Tohoku region, which suffered damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake. Among the participants were those carrying photos of former classmates who died in the tsunami triggered by the massive quake in March 2011. At a ceremony in the city of Rikuzentakata, which was devastated by the disaster, a representative of the new adults expressed determination to work toward the future. (Mainichi)
