Photo Journal: Wishin' and Hopin'

Women dressed in kimono are seen placing their hands together during the annual "Santera mairi" (three temple visits) festival in Hida, Gifu Prefecture, on Jan. 15, 2017. The local event has over 300 years of history, and from the Meiji to Taisho periods, young women working outside the area would return to their home and dress up for the festival. As the event served as an opportunity for young locals to meet, it is now believed to bring romance to visitors to all three temples. (Mainichi)
