Photo Journal: Kyoto dresses up for spring

Geisha and apprentice geisha (maiko) are seen during a fitting session for the upcoming 65th Kitano Odori dance performance at the Kamishichiken Kaburenjo theater in Kyoto's Kamigyo Ward on Feb. 21, 2017. The popular annual event -- running from March 25 through April 7 -- will herald a series of spring dance performances to be held in Kyoto's five major entertainment quarters. This year's program will include "Enishi no miya -- sue wa hitotsuninaru monogatari," a dance drama about a young couple set in a shrine believed to bring romance, and "Ryojo tokorodokoro," a dance performance associated with traditional folk ballads and local events. A similar fitting session was also held at the Miyagawacho Kaburenjo theater in the ancient capital's Higashiyama Ward, with entertainers clad in flamboyant kimono attire posing on the stage for photographs to be carried in event brochures.
