Photo Journal: Set in stone

Senior citizens read the text on a memorial stone that was unveiled in a peace memorial park in the city of Itoman in Okinawa Prefecture, on March 14, 2017. The stone lists the names of 21 secondary schools in the prefecture which deployed pupils to take part in the Battle of Okinawa at the end of World War II. It is thought that approximately 2,000 students were sent to participate in the battle -- in fighting, orderly or nursing roles -- and that about 1,000 of them died as a result. One of the attendees at the unveiling event on March 14 said tearfully, "I want lots of people to know that there was a 21-school army (that took part in that battle)." (Mainichi)
