Photo Journal: Flames of hope

Residents of the Kiyama temporary housing facility in the town of Mashiki, Kumamoto Prefecture, are seen praying during a minute of silence held at 9:26 p.m. on April 14, 2017, the one-year anniversary of a magnitude 6.5-quake that shook Kumamoto Prefecture two days before an even stronger temblor. Mashiki was one of the hardest hit areas, with 37 residents dying in the twin-earthquake disaster, both directly and indirectly. At this temporary housing facility, residents hung 1,000 paper cranes and lit around 600 bamboo candles bearing the message "We will not be defeated by the earthquake, we will recover." (Mainichi)
