Photo Journal: Colorful ride

Colorfully dressed horses march down a street leading to the Morioka Hachimangu shrine in the Iwate Prefecture capital of Morioka on the morning of June 10, 2017, with local children on horseback during the annual "Chagu Chagu Umakko" festival, a designated national intangible cultural asset. Some 70 horses carried the children for approximately 13 kilometers to the Morioka shrine from the Onikoshi Sozen shrine in the prefecture city of Takizawa. The festival dates back to the Edo period when local farmers showed appreciation for horses working in farms. The name of the festival comes from the sound of jingling bells as horses march.
