Photo Journal: Sweet summer scene

"Test" watermelons are seen halved and spread out for inspection in Tawaramoto, Nara Prefecture, in this recent photo. The fruit are checked for hollows, sweetness, and taste-tested for texture and flavor. Nara Prefecture produces the pricey "Yamato" watermelon, though the region accounts for less than 1 percent of total domestic watermelon production. On the other hand, the prefecture does supply 80 percent of Japan's watermelon seeds, making it the engine of the country's watermelon sector. (Mainichi)
