Photo Journal: Dangling delicacies

An employee of hydroponic cultivation equipment manufacturer Kyowa Co. checks on melons growing above her head using the company's technology in the city of Takatsuki, Osaka Prefecture, on June 26, 2017. Hydroponic melons are grown by planting seedlings in a cultivation tank and circulating liquid fertilizer, water and oxygen through the system. Since the roots face no resistance from soil, they can spread out freely. The result is a larger harvest, the company says -- roughly 10 times larger than growing them in soil. A single plant can produce up to 90 fruits. The harvest will continue through July, and the melons are available for purchase at Kyowa's produce stand. (Mainichi)
