Police officers carry an elderly woman from a Self-Defense Forces (SDF) helicopter after she was rescued on July 7, 2017, in Asakura, Fukuoka Prefecture. The number of SDF troops, firefighters and police who have been deployed for search-and-rescue operations across northern Kyushu rose from about 7,800 on July 6 to 12,000 the next day, after the region was ravaged by landslides and floods sparked by torrential rain. As of July 8, 16 people had been confirmed dead while 15 people remained missing in Oita and Fukuoka prefectures. (Mainichi)
