Photo Journal: Monumental climb


Runners take on the challenge of the 70th Fuji Mountain Race up the famous 3,776-meter mountain straddling Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures, on July 28, 2017. A total of 3,669 racers from Japan and abroad started from Fujiyoshida City Hall in Yamanashi Prefecture at around 770 meters above sea level. Runners then either climbed 3,000 meters over a roughly 21-kilometer course to the peak or a 15-kilometer course to the Fifth Station of Mount Fuji. Shun Gorotani, 24, clinched the men's peak course title for the first time at 2 hours, 31 minutes, 34 seconds, while Sho Matsumoto, 31, won the Fifth Station course for the second time at 1:21:29. Yuri Sumiyoshi, 31, won the women's peak course at 3:01:17, and Chika Tawara, 34, won the women's Fifth Station course at 1:36:48, both their first wins. (Mainichi)
