Photo Journal: Old-fashioned facial

Monks carefully remove dust from the face of the Great Buddha in Todaiji temple's Great Buddha Hall in Nara on Aug. 7, 2017. Some 180 monks and others related to the temple participated in the "Ominugui" cleaning ritual, which began at 7 a.m. with a Buddhist ritual to temporarily remove the spirit of the monument before beginning the thorough cleaning with dusters. For difficult-to-reach places such as the face and the hands, the participants mounted small gondolas suspended from the ceiling. (Mainichi)
