Photo Journal: Silent beauty

A magnolia tree in full bloom stands illuminated in the yard of an empty home in Tomioka, Fukushima Prefecture, in this recent photo. "I'm very proud of this tree, and I wanted people to see it again," said 71-year-old Tomoyuki Seki, owner of both the home and the tree, which has watched over his children grow over the past decades. His property was within the Fukushima nuclear disaster evacuation zone until April this year, when residents in much of the town were permitted to return. However, Seki has decided to demolish the house, but to keep the tree to remind himself this is his home. (Mainichi)
