Photo Journal: Bay of fire

Fireworks light up a bay dotted with oyster farms in Yamada, Iwate Prefecture, in mid-August of 2017. The annual fireworks festival has never been cancelled since its launch in 2007, not even in the summer after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami devastated the town. This year, some 5,000 fireworks burst above the bay to the delight of onlookers. One organizer commented that the display helped to lift the recovering community's spirits, and was also a memorial for the townspeople lost in the disaster. (Mainichi)
