Photo Journal: Full-scale recycled revival

A life-sized cardboard mockup of a D51 steam locomotive, nicknamed "Degoichi," is exhibited on a concourse at JR Hiroshima Station in the city of Hiroshima. The model was created by Hideo Shima, a 68-year-old cardboard craftsman, to mark the return of the D51 on the JR Yamaguchi Line in late November for the first time in 44 years. The model is 20 meters long, 3 meters wide, and 4 meters high and weighs 1.5 tons. Some 4,000 cardboard pieces from a fruit and vegetable market were elaborately recycled for the project, which Shima spent 10 hours creating. "Come and see the Degoichi revived from waste material," he said. The cardboard model will be on display until Nov. 20. (Mainichi)
