Photo Journal: Hefty helping

A participant lifts a heavy rice cake during an event at Daigoji Temple, a World Heritage site in Kyoto's Fushimi Ward. In the event, titled "Mochi Age Chikara Hono" (dedication of power by rice-cake lifting), 45 men and women competed to see how long they could hold up massive rice cakes weighing 150 kilograms and 90 kilograms, respectively. Momoko Fujita, a 31-year-old housewife from the Kyoto Prefecture city of Kameoka, won the women's competition with a time of 6 minutes, 28 seconds, while Kazuya Okamura from Kyoto's Kita Ward came out tops in the men's competition with a time of 5 minutes, 16 seconds.
