Photo Journal: Mammoth effort

Giant tortoises climb a mound at iZoo in the town of Kawazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, in this recent photo. The facility that hosts reptiles and amphibians built the embankments, 1-2 meters high, to exhibit the giant tortoises moving like they would in the wild. The animals move more than expected despite their reputation for their docile behavior. The biggest tortoise at the zoo weighs 180 kilograms and is estimated to be around 130 years old. It enjoys climbing the steep slope while swaying its huge body from side to side. (Mainichi)
