MACHIDA, Tokyo -- The local municipal government here has begun to light up city hall in the Olympic colors to boost excitement ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

The local government installed floodlights in the city hall's atrium that illuminate the windows from the inside in red, blue, yellow and green from the third through 10th floors.

While lighting up from the outside can be seen at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government office and other buildings, illuminating from the inside of a building is being carried out for the first time by a municipality in Japan, according to the local government.

Meanwhile, the local government will change the colors in accordance with other events. In October, it will light up city hall in pink due to a campaign to promote public awareness about breast cancer. Looking toward the Rugby World Cup Japan 2019, if a foreign national team is based in the city, the local government will illuminate city hall in the colors of that country's national flag.

The light-up event is being held from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Wednesday and Friday.
