TOKYO -- Giant panda cub Xiang Xiang at the Ueno Zoological Gardens in Taito Ward here has started to eat the leaves of bamboo, making progress toward being weaned from her mother's milk.

The Ueno zoo released the latest photos and video of the popular cub on July 24. Her feces have been mostly made of bamboo fibers since July 14. According to zoo officials, her weight has exceeded 30 kilograms. She also eats apples besides bamboo, and drinks her mother's milk.

Xiang Xiang has not been going to her outdoor playground lately due to the fierce heat, and spends her days in an indoor exhibition room kept at 25 degrees Celsius via air conditioning. She often plays on a handmade hammock, which was given to her as a present for her first birthday on June 12 by zookeepers.
