Wheelchair rugby: Japan wins maiden world championship title

SYDNEY (Kyodo) -- Japan won its maiden world championship in wheelchair rugby on Friday, beating Rio de Janeiro Paralympic champions Australia 62-61 in the gold medal match.

    The win over world No. 1 Australia was Japan's first gold medal at a world championship or Paralympics. The United States, the Rio silver medalists, won bronze at the 12-team meet.

    World No. 4 Japan, the Rio bronze medalists, had advanced to the gold medal match thanks to a 51-46 victory over the United States on Thursday. Japan's only loss at the six-day tournament at Sydney Olympic Park came against Australia in the pool stage.
