Nikkei drops for 5th straight day after series of natural disasters

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks fell Thursday, with the Nikkei index extending its losing streak to a fifth day, following an overnight powerful earthquake in Hokkaido and a strong typhoon that hit western Japan earlier this week.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 92.89 points, or 0.41 percent, from Wednesday at 22,487.94. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 12.55 points, or 0.74 percent, lower at 1,692.41.

Decliners were led by insurance, consumer credit and miscellaneous product issues.
