Gravestones that collapsed are seen at the central cemetery in Atsuma, Hokkaido, on Sept. 16, 2018, after a deadly earthquake struck the northernmost prefecture 10 days earlier. There are nearly 1,000 gravestones in the town and most of them toppled over and broke due to the temblor. Gravestones that toppled over can be put back in place using a crane, but broken ones have to be replaced as restoration is difficult. Stonemason Noriyuki Saito, 47, stated with a sigh, "Repairs won't be completed even in time for next year's Bon festival (held in mid-August to honor the spirits of one's ancestors)." (Mainichi)
