Minami Yamashita, center, a 20-year-old resident of Hachijojima Island in southern Tokyo, receives a sash for a relay race from the previous competitor in the 17th Pipo Universal Ekiden at Meijijingu Gaien park in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward on Sept. 24, 2018. About 300 competitors and volunteers participated in the event, which was organized by the incorporated non-profit organization Communication Square 21. A total of 15 teams consisting of elementary school children, people aged at least 65, those with disabilities, wheelchair users and other individuals competed over a special 1.1 kilometer course in the park. Participants didn't compete by speed but rather by the difference from a secret target time set by the organizer. Yamashita was born with cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. After completing the course she said, "I'm happy to hear people's cheers. I want to take part again."
