Photo Journal: Pictogram countdown

(Mainichi/Koichiro Tezuka)

Sprinter Shota Iizuka, a Rio de Janeiro Olympic silver medalist in the men's 4x100-meter relay, center left; Kiyou Shimizu, who won two world championships in karate, right, of Iizuka; and local elementary school students raise signs showing 50 pictograms that represent events at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the capital's Koto Ward, on March 12, 2019, marking 500 days until the start of the global sporting bonanza. The pictograms use simple designs for each sport, out of respect for the simplicity adopted in creating pictograms for 20 events in the 1964 Tokyo Games. The images will be printed on the tickets and used for decorating Olympic venues and for other purposes.
