Ukulele-strumming comic chat artist Shinji Maki dies after river plunge

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Ukulele-strumming comic chat artist Shinji Maki died early Monday morning after jumping into the Tama River bordering Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture in an apparent suicide, police said. He was 78.

Maki, a Tokyo native whose real name was Moritsune Oi, is renowned for his humorous Hawaiian music-like songs of social satire that include the line, "Oh, I'm fed up."

A passerby reported witnessing a man who appeared to be Maki take a leap into the river at around 0:15 a.m., police said.

Maki suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2002 but resumed his activities as a comedian after undergoing rehabilitation.
