◇FLIGHT TO FREEDOM
A Japanese crested ibis flies out of an open cage in Sado, Niigata Prefecture, on Sept. 29. The Ministry of the Environment conducted its second trial of releasing artificially raised birds into the wild by leaving the cage open, hoping to have the birds breed in a natural environment. All 20 birds in the cage had flown into the wild by Oct. 3, five days after the release began. Japanese crested ibis are registered as a special Japanese natural treasure.
