Princess Mako, 25, the elder daughter of Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko, will soon become engaged to commoner Komuro Kei, 25, the Imperial Household Agency said on May 16. The couple met while studying at International Christian University (ICU).
It will be the first engagement among the four grandchildren of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko. The last marriage involving a member of the Imperial Family was of Princess Noriko, 28, the second daughter of the late Prince Takamado, which took place in October 2014.
According to agency chief Yamamoto Shinichiro, Komuro works at a law firm in central Tokyo. He is also a graduate student at Hitotsubashi University's Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy. Komuro lost his father as a child and lives with his mother and grandfather in the city of Yokohama.
Princess Mako met Komuro about five years ago through a friend at ICU, and they quickly became close. Komuro proposed to Princess Mako about a year later, and both their families have accepted the two as a couple, an agency source said. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have been informed that the couple is preparing for marriage. The agency is planning to hold the couple's wedding next year.
In 2010, Komuro worked as "Prince of the Sea" on a project to promote tourism for the Kanagawa prefectural city of Fujisawa. Being fluent in English, he actively communicated with foreign tourists during the project, one of his colleagues said.
Their friends from university all wished the couple happiness after hearing the news, with one woman commenting of Komuro, "He is a brilliant student and a true gentleman."
Under the Imperial House Law, female members of the Imperial Family must leave the family if they marry commoners. When Princess Mako marries, the number of Imperial Family members will drop to 18, and that of female members to 13.
Princess Mako obtained a master's degree in art museum and gallery studies at the University of Leicester in Britain. The princess is now an affiliate researcher at the University of Tokyo's University Museum, while enrolled in a doctoral program at ICU.
