North Korea fires missiles amid international pressure
North Korea fired several short‐range anti‐ship cruise missiles on June 8. The launches were North Korea's fourth test in four weeks, showing its resolve to continue its development of missiles, even under intensifying international pressure to stop.
The missiles were fired from the eastern North Korean town of Wonsan and landed in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, where U.S. aircraft carriers had conducted joint exercises with the South Korean navy earlier this month.
The launches were also the first since the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously on June 2 to add 14 individuals and four entities linked to North Korea's nuclear and missile programs to a U.N. sanctions blacklist. The resolution will impose a global travel ban and asset freeze.
Pyongyang had defied the resolution, saying, "Whatever sanctions and pressure may follow, we will not flinch from the road to build up nuclear forces."
