Celebrated Champion

Hakuho defeated fellow Mongolian yokozuna Harumafuji on the final day of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on July 23 to capture a record‐extending 39th career title. The victory came after Hakuho picked up a record‐breaking 1,048th career win on July 21. He capped the tournament with a 14‐1 record.

"I had my sights on (former ozeki) Kaio's record of 1,047 wins and (former) yokozuna Chiyonofuji's mark of 1,045 at this tournament. I'm happy to achieve both of them," Hakuho, 32, said in an interview during the award ceremony at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, where the tournament was held.

Hakuho came to Japan at the age of 15, weighing less than 70 kilograms. However, he has strived to gain strength ever since his early days at the sumo stable. He would go to the training room by himself even on his days off, and repeat basic movements such as stomping and shuffling, over and over again.

The dedicated grappler was promoted to yokozuna in 2007, and achieved a record‐breaking 33rd career title in 2015. Since 2010, he has hosted the annual Hakuho Cup, a friendly sumo tournament that attracts approximately 1,000 boys from Japan and around the world - one of the ways in which the yokozuna does his part in expanding the sumo population.

Being in his 30s, however, Hakuho has become prone to injury. He sat out the entire September tournament in 2016 for the first time as yokozuna, due to a right toe injury. He also withdrew partway through the March 2017 tournament due to toe and thigh injuries. In order to improve his physical condition, he fasted before the May 2017 tournament, and clinched his first title in a year with a perfect 15‐0 record.

Hakuho cites his next goal as another unprecedented record of 1,000 top division wins. "I want to build up wins to keep inspiring children who aspire to be professional sumo wrestlers," he said.
