Heart Amid Horror

Thousands died on Sept. 11, 2001, when two airliners struck the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York - that much we all know. But what was it like for those in the twin towers that day?

That is the experience director Martin Guigui is looking to convey in his new film "9/11," through the stories of five people trapped in an elevator as the twin towers burned.

The five are a diverse lot: a businessman and his wife - played by Charlie Sheen and Gina Gershon - on their way to divorce mediation; a bicycle messenger; a building maintenance engineer; and a young woman going to dump her boyfriend. And while just one of the characters - the maintenance man - is based on an actual person, realism was a top priority for Guigui, to bring that morning to visceral life for the audience even 16 years later.

The film "awoke in me emotions that I had buried for many years, and I think it's going to do the same for anyone who sees it," said Guigui during a recent interview with the Mainichi Shimbun.

The story was based on a play, which Guigui says he expanded for film, weaving in personal relationships between the characters to better illustrate human conflict and boost narrative tension.

Guigui furthermore stressed the effort that went into making the film true to life. Instead of using CG, he built physical sets based on WTC blueprints. Also,"The length of time that it took the buildings to fall is the length of the film," said the director. "So, subconsciously the audience is reliving the exact experience, only from the inside."

The very end of the film, however, switches gears. After white‐knuckle scenes of the people in the towers, the audience is given the chance to remember those who never got to see Sept. 12. This wasn't in the original play, or the draft film script. But Sheen, who was born in New York City, "wanted to dedicate the film to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for others" - a fitting end to a story about the human side of disaster.
