Fire on the Ice

As Japan gears up for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, which will be held from Feb. 9 to 25, the country's figure skating stars are looking to glide and spin their way to victory.

Reigning world champion Hanyu Yuzuru, 23, silver medalist Uno Shoma, 20, and 2017 Japan Figure Skating Championships silver medalist Tanaka Keiji, 23, will represent Japan in the men's singles competition at the Winter Games. Miyahara Satoko, 19, a silver medalist at the 2015 World Championships, and emerging star Sakamoto Kaori, 17, will compete in the women's singles.

For Hanyu, the games represent a chance to win a second-straight Olympic gold. Blessed with outstanding artistic expression and the ability to execute difficult quads, Hanyu is the current world record holder for the short program, free skate and combined total scores, and if he performs flawlessly, it is unlikely anyone will be able to beat him.

However, lingering concern is his ankle injury, which he suffered during practice in November that prompted him to forgo the national championships. But a Japan Skating Federation official said Hanyu has resumed practice on the ice and "will make it to the games."

Pyeongchang will be the first Olympics for Uno, who won the national championships in December with Hanyu absent. Known for his musicality, Uno has rapidly ascended since he successfully added a triple axel and his first quadruple jump to his arsenal in 2014. He has since boosted his quads and remains motivated to surpass Hanyu.

However, he failed to display his best performance in the short program and free skate at the nationals. Regardless, he is committed to show his new skills at the biggest competition of the season. "I want to give my best performance," he said.

Meanwhile, Miyahara, who won her fourth consecutive gold at the nationals, and Sakamoto are looking to overturn Russia's dominance in the women's singles. While a stress fracture in her left hip joint kept Miyahara from competing during the latter half of last season - leaving her lagging behind her rivals this term until November - her steady and impressive performance at the nationals showed she is back in top form. "I'll do my best filled with gratitude that I managed to come this far," she said.
