Peruvian ex-president released from clinic after pardon
LIMA, Peru (AP) － Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, 79, left the clinic on Jan. 4 where he has been receiving treatment since his medical pardon from a 25-year jail sentence.
Departing in a wheelchair, Fujimori waved to a crowd of supporters gathered outside the clinic before entering a black SUV.
President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski granted a pardon on Dec. 24, 2017, while releasing a statement saying he decided to free Fujimori for "humanitarian reasons," citing doctors who had determined the ex-leader suffers from incurable and degenerative problems.
Fujimori, who governed from 1990 to 2000, is a polarizing figure. Some Peruvians laud him for defeating the Maoist Shining Path guerrilla movement, while others hate him for human rights violations carried out under his government.
Fujimori was first convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the killings of 25 people during his administration. He later received four more convictions.
