11-yr-old boy becomes youngest Othello champion
A fifth-grader from Kanagawa Prefecture has become the youngest person to win the World Othello Championships.
Fukuchi Keisuke, 11, won this year's event held in Prague from Oct. 9 to 12, defeating adults on his way to winning the title. Previously the youngest champion was Tanida Kunihiko, who won at age 15 in 1982.
Roughly 80 players from over 20 countries and regions participated this year. In his semifinal, Fukuchi defeated Takanashi Yusuke, who has five previous championships under his belt. He then went on to beat Thai player Piyanat Aunchulee in the best-of-three final with two wins and a draw. "All I can say is I am happy," Fukuchi said. "I want to send this happiness to people worldwide."
Fukuchi started playing Othello when he was in kindergarten, and sharpened his skills by using computer software to practice alone. He also became the youngest winner of the domestic elementary student grand prix when he was only in first grade.
Before Fukuchi's return flight took off, the captain announced that the new Othello World Champion was on board. Then came a surprise: The captain was actually Tanida. He praised the new youngest world champion, saying, "He's surpassed my record by a wide margin."
