Photo Journal: 1,000-year-old color awakens

The newly reproduced double door of the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin temple in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is displayed on Dec. 17, 2015. The red lacquer coating of the Japanese cypress door is the same deep red hue as that used in the original panels built some 1,000 years ago. There are 12 doors to the main Phoenix Hall building. The panels of the original double door -- a National Treasure -- will be stored in a different location to keep them from deteriorating. (Mainichi)
