Photo Journal: Period players

People dressed in Heian-period costume play a game of "karuta" -- traditional Japanese playing cards -- on the Noh stage at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto's Higashiyama Ward, on Jan. 3, 2016, as part of the shrine's New Year's celebrations. The cards are based on 100 famous poems by 100 famous poets, and the game is a Kyoto New Year's tradition. Spectators turned out in droves to see the 18 participants, including "karuta hime" (card princesses), try to win their first card games of 2016. (Mainichi)
