Photo Journal: 30,000 wishes

Some 30,000 "ema" or wooden plaques inscribed with students' hopes of passing school entrance exams are seen hung at Yushima Tenjin shrine, famous for offering visitors good luck in academics. Located in Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward, the shrine is packed everyday with students and their parents as entrance exam season is set to go into full swing. "I put in a lot of effort myself," said a 15-year-old third-year Tokyo junior high school student visiting the shrine ahead of his high school entrance exams. "But just in case, I came to ask the gods for their assistance." (Mainichi)
