Photo Journal: Train-ing the artistic eye

A man and a little boy admire a new fireworks design on the side of a Joetsu Shinkansen bullet train car at JR Omiya Station in Saitama on Jan. 12, 2016. The car is part of a "rolling art gallery" train dubbed the "Genbi Shinkansen." The six-car E3 model bullet train emerged from a railyard in Miyagi Prefecture that day to make the move to its home on the Joetsu Shinkansen line ahead of starting regular service this spring. The Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, fireworks display on this car is an enlarged snap by photographer Mika Ninagawa, while five other artists are expected to have about a car each displaying one of their works. The train interior is not yet complete, but will feature a cafe. (Mainichi)
