Photo Journal: Icy lights

Icy lakeside creations are seen lit up in Chitose, Hokkaido, on Jan. 28, 2016, ahead of the annual "Lake Shikotsu Hyoto Festival." These ice objects were made by spraying some 15 metric tons of water taken from the lake on frames. Lake Shikotsu's water quality has been crowned the best of all lakes in the country for eight straight years. On sunny days, the hue of the ice objects turns to what is called "Lake Shikotsu blue." The festival runs through from Jan. 29 through Feb. 21, and about 230,000 people are expected to visit. (Mainichi)
