Figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu will appear in a samurai film that is to be released in May, its producer said.

Hanyu plays the role of Date Shigemura, who served as a feudal lord in Sendai about 250 years ago, in the film, "Tono, Risoku de Gozaru." The film, produced by Shochiku Co., depicts a citizen who lends a massive amount of money to the Sendai clan to save citizens who suffered from heavy taxes imposed on them by the clan.

Hanyu, 21, agreed to perform in the movie as he comes from Sendai and this year marks the fifth anniversary of the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake that hit the Tohoku region including Sendai. The film was shot in summer last year.

"I worked hard to express myself. I made good use of this experience in not only my competition but also in exhibition shows," Hanyu said.
