Photo Journal: Fired up

Men in white gowns are seen lighting torches during a fire festival called "Oto matsuri" at Kamikura Shrine in Shingu, Wakayama Prefecture, on Feb. 6, 2016. About 2,400 men participated in the annual event, which has some 1,400 years of history, at an auxiliary of Kumano Hayatama Taisha grand shrine. The government's advisory body for cultural affairs recommended last month the fire event and Kumano Hayatama Taisha's annual festival be designated as important intangible folklore cultural properties.
