GIFU -- A zebra that escaped from a farm located on the border of Aichi and Gifu prefectures drowned in a pond at a golf course here on March 23 after being shot with a tranquilizer.

The owner of the 2-year-old male zebra, which was about 1.2 meters tall and weighed some 200 kilograms, reported the escape to Gifu Prefectural Police's Tajimi Police Station at around 7:20 p.m. on March 22, saying that the zebra ran off from Mikuni West Farm in the Aichi Prefecture city of Seto.

The owner, who operated a mobile zoo, had asked the farm to take care of the zebra. It was brought to the farm's equestrian club at around 5:30 p.m. on March 22, but after it entered a paddock, it took off, trampling down parts of a 1.5-meter-tall wooden fence.

The zebra was spotted at the golf course about 1 kilometer east of the farm on the morning of March 23. Some 20 people, including Tajimi police officers, tried to catch the animal using a blow dart to tranquilize it. The zebra was found dead in a pond at around 12:45 p.m. after apparently entering the water while under the influence of the anesthesia.
